English grammar refers to the collection of structural rules of formation of words, phrases, and sentences used in the English language. The English grammar includes verb tenses, articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and punctuations among many other topics. A thorough understanding of these topics is crucial as one would be unable to communicate effectively both verbally and through writing without a good understanding of these topics. This is why English grammar exercises and tests are very important in helping one acquire the required skills.
What Are Grammar Exercises?
Grammar exercises refer to structured activities aimed at assisting students in practicing particular grammar topics. Unlike reading and memorizing a particular topic and leaving it that way, a student is required to put the acquired knowledge into practice. Common exercise types include fill-in-the-blank tasks, sentence transformation, error correction, matching activities, and rewriting sentences using a target structure. For example, a fill-in-the-blank exercise on the present perfect might ask: “She already finished her homework.” The learner must supply "has" applying the rule in a real context.
The level of difficulty in such tasks increases. While beginners learn the simple rules for subject-verb agreement, intermediates deal with the conditional structure of sentences, whereas advanced learners are assigned exercises with more complex passive constructions and/or reported speech. This way, every student gets the opportunity to use previously acquired knowledge and rules in practice while studying new ones.
What Are Grammar Quizzes?
A grammar quiz is a form of testing aimed at assessing the level of understanding and the ability to memorize a particular grammatical construction. Exercises provide the learner with a guide to practice grammar structures while quizzes assess the performance. Thus, taking a quiz helps detect those areas that have been learned by heart and those that require additional practice. What is good about quizzes, they provide instant feedback. It is crucial not only to see whether your answers are right or wrong, but also to learn the reasons behind each answer.
Moreover, quizzes are motivating seeing since a low score motivates the student to revise and improve while good results encourage him/her to move forward.
